Growth and Photosynthetic Responses to Elevated [c02] in Grasses from Tasmanian Native Pasture
نویسنده
چکیده
Six species of grass (four C3 and two C4) from southeastern Australian native pastures were grown in controlled environment cabinets at current (~370 !!mol CO2 mol-I) and twice current (~750 !!mol CO2 mol-I) cabinet [C02l. Photosynthetic gas exchange and aboveground biomass were estimated after seven weeks. Cabinet [C02l had a highly significant impact on above-ground biomass (P<0.0003) with plants exposed to elevated [C02l having on average 78% greater above-ground biomass than the controls. The relative increase of above-ground biomass caused by elevated [C02] varied among species. [C02] during gas exchange measurements and species had highly significant impacts on carbon assimilation and evapotranspiration rates, stomatal conductance and water-use efficiency. Cabinet [C02l had a significant impact on carbon assimilation rate only, for which there was a significant cabinet [C02l x species interaction. Carbon assimilation rate was influenced by cabinet [C02l only for Poa labillardierei, but this may well be related to pot conditions. Three-factor analysis of variance found no interaction between cabinet [C02l and [C02l during photosynthetic measurements, further supporting a lack of photosynthetic acclimation to elevated [C02l in young plants of these temperate Australian grass species.

Mechanisms of drought stress tolerance in cool season grasses
Drought stress is one of the most limiting abiotic stresses affecting growth, production and survival of plants in many areas of the world, and is expected to intensify considering the trend of climate change. Grass species are important for the sustainability of agricultural systems, forage resources for animal farming and landscapes. Grass species adapt to water deficit by different morpholog...
متن کاملThermotolerance capacities of native and exotic coastal plants will lead to changes in species composition under increased heat waves
With an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events, plants are likely to reach their thermal limits and show slower growth or increased mortality. We investigated differences amongst coastal native and invasive shrubs and grasses to investigate if particular species might be more at risk in the future. Using an ecologically relevant experimental set of heat waves over a mont...
متن کاملLeaf gas exchange responses of 13 prairie grassland species to elevated CO 2 and increased nitrogen supply
• Leaf gas exchange responses to elevated CO 2 and N are presented for 13 perennial species, representing four functional groups: C 3 grasses, C 4 grasses, legumes, and nonleguminous forbs. Understanding how CO 2 and N effects interact is important to predict plant community response to global change. • Plants were field-grown in monoculture under current ambient and elevated (560 μ mol mol − 1...
متن کاملSaltgrass, a potential future landscaping plant and a suitable species for desert regions: A review
Continuous desertification of arable lands mandates use of low quality/ saline water for irrigation, especially in regions experiencing water shortage. Using low quality/ saline water for irrigation imposes more stress on plants that are already under stress in these regions. Thus, a logical solution will be to find a salt/ drought-tolerant plant species that will survive/sustain under such str...
متن کاملSoil and plant water relations determine photosynthetic responses of C3 and C4 grasses in a semi-arid ecosystem under elevated CO2.
To model the effect of increasing atmospheric CO2 on semi-arid grasslands, the gas exchange responses of leaves to seasonal changes in soil water, and how they are modified by CO2, must be understood for C3 and C4 species that grow in the same area. In this study, open-top chambers were used to investigate the photosynthetic and stomatal responses of Pascopyrum smithii (C3) and Bouteloua gracil...
